Woven Pattern – Diagonal Series

mocomatics3/3

The appearance of any textile is mainly based on its weaving pattern. Since warp yarns (the lengthwise threads in a roll) are usually covered by filling yarns, the underlying pattern is not visible. By increasing the size of threads, i.e. using ribbons or belts instead of thin threads, these intricate, almost microscopic structures are revealed.

This series is a collaboration with my Mum Pia. Each Woven Pattern of the diagonal series is generated by using random diagonal fill rules on a 6x6 rapport.

My mum's work explores and emphasises the aesthetic of these classic, yet complex structures by magnifying them for the viewer. In «Suburban Series» architectural motifs, like building facades, emerge in the eye of the viewer from abstract color arrangements. In other pieces, once having moved further away, the materiality of the plastic belts slowly dissolves and pure color comes into play – reminding of Bridget Riley’s Op-Art.
