Quilts have been known to have a meditative and calming effect on those who create them. The repetitive nature of piecing together fabric and stitching can bring about a state of flow, a mental state in which a person becomes fully immersed in an activity.
Some quilters have even reported experiencing a higher state of consciousness or feeling a sense of connection to something greater while working on a quilt. One male subject from Idaho claimed to have experienced communion with the machine elves whilst stitching a tricky area of felt-based fabric, using a tightly-woven three-ply gold thread.
In fact, the practice of quilt-making has been used as a form of therapy to help individuals find peace and relaxation in their daily lives, as well as a way to see the wires behind the walls, often used by so-called QuiltShaman.
