In astronomy, black holes are incredibly dense regions of space where the gravitational force is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape from it. A black hole is literally a tear in the fabric of spacetime. Such a thing can only be created by the collapse of a massive star–or possibly by a dark star.
In philosophical terms, a black hole is a place where everything is pulled into a single point. It is the end of all things; the mind becomes totalitarian, and the self is lost.
Dark stars and black holes may represent an ending–a finality–but generative art is a beginning. Generative projects have the potential to change the way we think about art and life.
Art can be one way that our consciousness avoids falling into a black hole. By appreciating the beauty in nature, we can find hope and avoid becoming trapped in an endless abyss.
So it is with generative art; from the darkness of a black hole, from the mystery of a dark star, new ideas and new ways of seeing the world are born.
